History of New Castle Delaware

Kalamar Nycel
New Castle County, Delaware was founded in 1638 when the first settlers touched soil at Fort Christina. This was a direct result of an expedition carried out by Peter Minuit in the Kalmar Nyckel, a Dutch built armed merchant ship which carried Swedish Settlers. Peter Minuit was from Wesel which is now North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany.
The new colony was originally known as New Sweden but is now known as Wilmington. Wilmington is now the county seat of Delaware.
In 1644, Queen Christina appointed Lt. Col. Johan Printz as Governor of New Sweden.
