History of Sussex Delaware

Sussex County was home to the Leni Lenape and Nanticoke Tribes thousands of years before the Portuguese or Spanish first set foot on the shores of Sussex County. In 1609, Henry Hudson, discovered the Delaware River followed by Samuel Argall, an English explorer who was blown off course in 1610 and landed in a bay which he named after Thomas West, Lord De Las Warr.

Sussex County borders six other counties of which five of these are within two other American States. These counties are Kent County in Delaware, Cape May County, Worcester County, Dorchester County, Wicomico County and Caroline County in Maryland.
